WRITER'S BOOKSHELF

Born in Houston, Texas, La’Nelle Gambrell attended schools in Texas and California. Her love of writing began in elementary school when she won an essay contest. That was all the encouragement she needed and she’s been writing ever since. A voracious reader since her early teens when she used to ‘borrow’ romance and mystery books from her aunt’s keeper shelf, she dreamed that someday she would write just such wonderful stories herself.

As it often happens in the real world, real life intervenes. But after several forays in different directions La’Nelle found a niche. With a background in graphic design and journalism she accepted the position of art director for KIII-TV, an ABC affiliate in Corpus Christi, Texas. After a few years she left television to go into business for herself.

As the owner of La’Nelle Gambrell Advertising/Art in Corpus Christi Texas she spent her early years concentrating on building her business. Her expertise in corporate and logo design helped build a Texas-wide client list that included banks, hotels, travel agencies, commuter airlines, fast-food restaurants, television and radio stations, power companies and two Texas State Senators. She wrote everything from television, newspaper and magazine ad copy to press releases and speeches. She produced her own television and radio spots, edited countless newsletters and won numerous Addy awards. She even had her own weekly television show, Computer Football Forecast on the local CBS affiliate and somehow in the midst of it all . . . she met and married the love of her life.

Now, twenty-five years later La’Nelle is still married to the man she refers to as the best looking pilot in Texas. She and Joe live near Liberty Texas with two prairie dogs, two regular dogs and two irregular cats on a private lake where she finally has the time to pursue the other love of her life. Writing . . . this time from the heart.

An evening in the life of La’Nelle Gambrell, here in her own words, "When the day is done and the last of the evening light is slowly slipping beyond the cypress trees across the lake, we sit out here on the deck sipping our nightly margarita.

The scent of jasmine and honeysuckle wafts along on the evening breeze as we watch the herons wade the shallows, fishing for one last fingerling before heading off to roost.

Fog settles like a blanket across the lake as the night creeps in and a chorus of crickets and tree frogs begin their vocal exercises. Bud, the bullfrog, occasionally joins in with his lovelorn bellow while overhead, fireflies are flashing neon love notes.

Joe and I look at each other and smile - Life is great."

When she’s not writing, La’Nelle enjoys traveling, kayaking and antique shop browsing. She’s a volunteer for Safe Haven Animal Shelter, a local no-kill shelter, and always reminds her friends to be responsible pet owners by having their animals spayed or neutered.
